Its that time of year again and it has really come around fast. With only one week to go to this years gathering again being held in the Albuquerque Marriott; the excitement is surely building for all those lucky enough to have tickets and to be attending the event but also amongst those of us like me that will have to watch from a far.
We all know that these events are great fun to attend and a great place to catch up with other collectors and maybe even find that elusive missing piece of your collection but the Albuquerque gathering is a very special one for anyone who has a love or interest in Matchbox as a brand for this is the event that Mattel the owners of the brand have chosen to use as a platform to release some critical information to the collecting public.
This year will be the 17th Gathering and it is already shaping up to be one of the biggest and best yet, the three day event has so much on for each day it will be a very busy time for the attendees. If you are going you have the opportunity to meet with members of the Matchbox team from Mattel and ask them questions about the job, the process and maybe get a little inside running on some upcoming product. If you are unable to attend in person then with only a slight delay in time the reports will begin to flow from the gathering and the rest of the world soon learns whats new, whats coming next for Matchbox and how things are shaping up for the coming year. The Mattel team usually also reveal what may be in multi packs, what is coming in other ranges like the Moving Parts series or the Real Working Rigs so its well worth going just for that.
Of course there is so much more to the event than that, there are various workshops held over the course of the event about Matchbox, its history and other aspects of the hobby of diecast collecting. These workshops have been put on by a variety of well known collectors, Matchbox employees or ex-employees like Paul Carr who travels from the United Kingdom to regularly attend the gathering and to participate in theses talks; in fact this years Paul is again one of the main speakers discussing ”The people behind the models”
So if you are attending the event or not there is a lot to look forward to and with only a week to go what are you hoping to get from the event? and what are you hoping to see in 2020?
